New Delhi, August 6: The All India Sufi Sajjadanshin Council (AISSC) has expressed support for the central government’s proposed changes to the Waqf Board Act. AISSC Chairman Syed Naseruddin Chishty urged everyone to cooperate with the government during a press conference in Delhi.

Call for Cooperation

Syed Naseruddin Chishty emphasized the importance of defining and protecting the position of dargahs. He appealed to all political parties to avoid politicizing the issue and encouraged those opposing the amendments to participate in discussions and support the bill.

Transparency and Corruption

Chishty highlighted the need for transparency in the Waqf Board, citing various corruption issues. He expressed confidence that the amendments would benefit minorities and Muslims and urged people not to be misled.

Meeting with Kiren Rijiju

On August 5, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju met with a delegation from the AISSC, including prominent Sajjadanashins from various dargahs. Rijiju described the discussion as fruitful and forward-looking, noting the delegation’s praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts towards community welfare.

Proposed Amendments

The Waqf amendment bill is expected to be presented after the passage of the Finance Bill. The government consulted various Muslim intellectuals and organizations to ensure comprehensive reforms. Key proposed changes include mandatory registration of Waqf properties with the District Collector’s office and enhanced inclusivity by ensuring women’s representation on Waqf councils and boards.
