In a significant move towards India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, Airbus announced plans to establish a Final Assembly Line (FAL) for H-125 helicopters in collaboration with Tata. The work is set to begin this winter.

Key Announcements

Olivier Michalon, Airbus Executive Vice President Global Business, stated that eight potential sites have been identified, with the final location to be decided soon. He emphasized India’s importance as a growing market for commercial helicopters.

Despite regulatory challenges, Michalon expressed optimism about India’s potential. He noted that Airbus sees a demand for up to 500 H-125 helicopters in India and neighboring countries, with the first delivery expected in 2026. Initial production will be 10 helicopters per year, potentially increasing to 20, 30, or even 50 units annually.

Market Potential

Airbus is confident that the H-125 will replicate the success of its A-320 commercial aircraft. Currently, over 7,000 H-125 helicopters are operational worldwide, including in the competitive US market.

Sunny Guglani, head of Airbus Helicopter in India and South Asia, highlighted the low number of helicopters in the region, indicating significant growth potential. Airbus currently holds a 40% market share in the commercial helicopter market in South Asia.

Additional Collaborations

Airbus is also developing a robust ecosystem for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of helicopters in India. In December 2023, Airbus partnered with Indamer to enhance MRO services in Mumbai, New Delhi, and Nagpur.

In the defense sector, Airbus has contributed through the C295 program and invests heavily in India’s digital and engineering capabilities. The Airbus India Engineering Centre and Digital Centre in Bengaluru support global operations with advanced aeronautical engineering and digital projects.
