On a significant day for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Air Asia’s inaugural international flight, AK-55, from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, landed at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair. This event marks the end of a 22-year wait since the airport was granted international status.

The arrival of this flight is a major milestone for the region’s tourism sector, which has struggled with limited air connectivity. Mohan Vinod, President of the Andaman Association of Tour Operators, expressed his excitement, stating that international flights will unlock the islands’ tourism potential. He praised the efforts of the government and Air Asia in achieving this goal.

Modernized Airport Facilities

Veer Savarkar International Airport, named in 2002 after freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, has undergone extensive modernization. Its new terminal, opened on July 18, 2023, features a sea-shell-inspired design and can handle up to 5 million passengers annually. The terminal includes 28 check-in counters, four conveyor belts, and three aerobridges, accommodating 1,200 passengers during peak hours.
