AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi Criticizes UP Government Over Bahraich Encounter

Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has raised concerns about the actions of the Uttar Pradesh government following an encounter in Bahraich. He questioned the police’s decision to shoot the accused, Sarfaraz and Mohammad Talib, in the leg while they were allegedly trying to escape to Nepal. Owaisi suggested that if there was enough evidence, legal proceedings should have been pursued instead of extrajudicial actions.

Uttar Pradesh’s Director General of Police, Prashant Kumar, stated that the two accused were injured during an encounter when they attempted to flee while being taken for weapons recovery near the India-Nepal border. Three others, Abdul Hameed, Fahim, and Abdul Afzal, were also arrested, and the situation is now under control.

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav criticized the state government, accusing it of using encounters to hide administrative failures. He emphasized the need for peaceful processions and questioned the government’s ability to maintain law and order.

Congress also condemned the UP government, with UP Congress President Ajay Rai accusing it of conducting fake encounters to cover up its shortcomings. SP Bahraich, Vrinda Shukla, explained that the police acted in self-defense when the accused fired at them.

The incident occurred during a Durga idol immersion procession in Bahraich, where clashes between two communities resulted in the death of Ramgopal Mishra and injuries to several others.
