AIIMS New Delhi Launches GRASSROOT Trial for Advanced Stroke Treatment

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has initiated the GRASSROOT clinical trial to test a new stent-retriever for stroke treatment. This trial aims to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the device, which is designed to address the unique characteristics of stroke clots in the Indian population.

Innovative Stroke Treatment

Dr. Shailesh Gaikwad, head of the Department of Neuroimaging & Interventional Neuroradiology at AIIMS, expressed excitement about the potential of this next-generation technology to improve stroke outcomes and set new global standards. The stent-retriever is designed to restore blood flow to the brain quickly and safely, and it is cost-effective, enhancing access to treatment.

Significant Milestone

The GRASSROOT trial, launched on August 15, 2024, marks a significant advancement in stroke care in India. The first patient treated under the trial at AIIMS was successfully discharged. Dr. Deepti Vibha, involved in the trial, believes it will usher in a new era of stroke care.

Addressing Stroke Challenges in India

India faces a critical challenge in stroke care, with only a small fraction of eligible patients receiving necessary treatment. Dr. Shashvat Desai and Dr. Dileep Yavagal emphasize the importance of making affordable stroke treatment devices accessible to tackle the long-term impact of stroke.

Collaborative Effort

The trial involves 16 hospitals across India, including AIIMS and JIPMER. Dr. Kalpesh Shah, an interventional neurosurgeon, highlighted the potential of these devices to revolutionize global stroke care.
