AIIMS Doctors Urge President to Intervene in West Bengal Hunger Strike for Justice

In New Delhi, the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) of AIIMS has written an urgent letter to the President of India. They are seeking immediate intervention in a hunger strike by doctors in West Bengal. This protest began after the tragic rape and murder of Dr. Abhaya on August 9 at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The letter highlights the critical condition of five doctors who are now in the ICU due to the ongoing protest. The doctors are demanding justice for Dr. Abhaya and the implementation of the National Task Force (NTF) guidelines, which aim to enhance the safety of healthcare workers.

Despite continuous protests, including the hunger strike, the authorities in West Bengal have not taken significant action, according to the RDA. The association describes the situation as “dire,” emphasizing the doctors’ role as the backbone of India’s healthcare system.

The RDA’s letter urges the President to push for immediate action from West Bengal authorities, expedite the release of the NTF guidelines, and ensure better protection for healthcare workers. They stress that timely intervention is crucial to save lives and restore faith in the justice system.

The RDA remains hopeful for a swift and just resolution to the crisis.
