AICC and APCC Team Visit Flood-Hit Morigaon in Assam

Hundreds of families in Assam’s Morigaon district have become homeless after the Brahmaputra River swallowed their homes and land. The flood situation is improving, but many people are still living on roads, bridges, embankments, and highlands.

Struggles of the Affected Families

Bharati Rai, a mother of two, shared that her family lost their home and land to river erosion and now live in a makeshift hut on an embankment. She said, “We can’t go outside to search for work due to the flood. We only get the ration card’s rice.”

Sita Thakur, another victim, said her family also lost their home to the river and now live on an embankment. She mentioned, “Nearly 30-35 families are now living here, and we are facing lots of problems.”

Current Situation in Gagalmari

Rasidul, a resident of Gagalmari village, reported that while floodwaters are receding, many houses are still flooded, and people are living on embankments. He said, “The connecting road to this village is still flooded, and there are many problems here due to the flood.”

Impact of the Flood

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, this year’s flood has claimed 96 lives and affected 5.11 lakh people in 17 districts. The floodwaters submerged 21,236.46 hectares of crop area and affected 1,132 villages.

AICC and APCC Visit

On Monday, a team from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) visited the flood-hit Morigaon district to meet the victims.
