AIADMK Leader D Jayakumar Criticizes DMK Government Over Kallakurichi Hooch Tragedy

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 24: AIADMK leader D Jayakumar has criticized the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government following a hooch tragedy in Kallakurichi district that resulted in 58 deaths. Jayakumar accused top leaders of being involved and questioned why the case was not transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He claimed that a one-man commission was formed to dilute the issue.

Jayakumar also alleged that the DMK government failed to maintain law and order, citing the open availability of illicit liquor and drugs. He questioned the effectiveness of the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home Department, in preventing such tragedies.

He further stated that there was a lack of proper medicine to treat those affected by illicit liquor, which could have saved many lives. AIADMK held a protest in Chennai demanding the resignation of Chief Minister MK Stalin.

The death toll in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy has risen to 58, with 156 people undergoing treatment at various government hospitals. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the state government would cover the education and hostel expenses of children who lost their parents in the tragedy. Additionally, Rs 5000 monthly assistance will be provided until the age of 18 for children who lost both parents, and Rs 5 lakh will be deposited as a fixed deposit in their names.
