Ahmed Alamkki’s Case: High Court Seeks Answers from Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia

Ahmed Alamkki, a foreign youth who entered India illegally, has filed a petition accusing the Indian police and administration of unlawfully detaining him. Alamkki was arrested by the Padav police station in Gwalior on September 21, 2014, and sentenced to three years imprisonment on August 22, 2015, for illegal entry. After completing his sentence on September 22, 2017, he was kept in Central Jail in Gwalior for nine months. He escaped to Hyderabad on June 12, 2018, but was re-arrested on June 23, 2018.

Additional Advocate General Rajesh Shukla explained that Alamkki entered India as a Rohingya and was arrested when he could not provide citizenship documents. After serving his sentence, he was placed in a temporary detention center as per Central Government guidelines. Alamkki later filed a habeas corpus petition in the Gwalior High Court, accusing the administration of illegal detention.

In a second case, Alamkki was sentenced to another three years in 2021 and kept in a detention center. He escaped again but was re-arrested. The court has now issued notices to the embassies of Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia to determine his nationality, as Alamkki had conflicting documents from both countries. The next hearing is scheduled for four weeks later.
