AFSPA Extended in Manipur’s Six Police Stations Amid Ongoing Ethnic Violence
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in six police stations across five districts in Manipur until March 31, 2025. This decision aims to address the ongoing ethnic violence and maintain security in the region.
Areas Affected
The AFSPA will be enforced in the areas under the jurisdiction of Sekmai, Lamsang, Lamlai, Jiribam, Leimakhong, and Moirang police stations. These areas are located in the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Jiribam, Kangpokpi, and Bishnupur.
Reason for Extension
The decision follows a comprehensive review of the security situation in Manipur, which continues to experience heightened tensions due to ethnic violence. There have been reports of intermittent gunfire, particularly in the fringe areas between Bishnupur and Churachandpur, as well as Imphal East, Kangpokpi, Imphal West, and Jiribam. Insurgent groups have been involved in violent acts in these regions.
Government’s Stance
The Central Government believes that the imposition of AFSPA is necessary to enable coordinated operations by security forces. This measure is intended to stabilize the region and curb insurgent activities. The Government of Manipur had previously declared the entire state, excluding areas under 19 police stations, as a “disturbed area” for six months starting October 1, 2024.
