Adish Aggarwala Urges Protection for Hindus in Bangladesh Amidst Political Turmoil
New Delhi, India, August 8: Adish Aggarwala, the outgoing president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), has made a heartfelt request to Mahbubuddin Khokon, the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association in Bangladesh. He asked Khokon to ensure that Hindus are not targeted during the current unrest in Bangladesh.
Aggarwala emphasized the importance of protecting religious minorities and preventing violence against them. He highlighted the role of the legal profession in safeguarding human rights and expressed his concern over reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. He urged the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association to protect Hindus from persecution.
In his address, Aggarwala also mentioned recent calls for the arrest of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana. He referred to the ‘Treaty between India and Bangladesh relating to Extradition,’ signed in 2013, which requires individuals to be charged with or found guilty of an extraditable offense for extradition to occur. He requested information on any criminal charges against Hasina and Rehana and any formal extradition request made by the Bangladesh government to India.
Aggarwala highlighted the strong relationship between the legal communities of India and Bangladesh. He mentioned his role in leading delegations from the Indian Bar and expressed gratitude for the recognition he has received from the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association. He also noted that several former Chief Justices of Bangladesh have participated in international conferences organized by the Indian legal community in London and New Delhi.
Bangladesh is currently experiencing political instability. Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position as Prime Minister on August 5 amidst growing protests. Following her resignation, President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of the country’s parliament to pave the way for an interim administration.
