ADB Approves $240.5 Million Loan for Rooftop Solar Systems in India

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan of $240.5 million to finance rooftop solar systems in India. This initiative supports the government’s efforts to expand energy access through renewable energy.

Program Details

The financing will support tranches 2 and 3 of the Multitranche Financing Facility (MFF) Solar Rooftop Investment Program, initially approved by ADB in 2016. In 2023, the program was restructured to focus on deploying residential solar rooftop systems.

Goals and Benefits

India aims to achieve about 50% of its electric power from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. ADB’s financing will contribute to the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar program, encouraging rooftop solar installations across the country.

Funding Allocation

The approved financing will be allocated to the State Bank of India (SBI) and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). Specifically, ADB will provide SBI with $90.5 million from its Clean Technology Fund (CTF), while NABARD will receive $150 million, comprising $80 million from ADB’s ordinary capital resources and $70 million from the CTF.

Impact on Power Distribution

Rooftop solar systems can reduce the technical and operational burden on the power distribution system by generating electricity close to where it is consumed. This reduces the need for long-distance power supply and associated system losses, enhancing efficiency and energy independence.

Environmental Goals

By increasing the share of renewable energy, India can reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and advance towards its climate commitments. The deployment of rooftop solar systems supports the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar program, contributing to a sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure.

Doubts Revealed

ADB -: ADB stands for Asian Development Bank. It is a bank that helps countries in Asia by giving them money for projects that can improve their economies and lives.

$240.5 Million -: $240.5 million is a large amount of money. It is equal to 240.5 million dollars, which is used to fund big projects like building solar panels.

Rooftop Solar Systems -: Rooftop solar systems are solar panels that are installed on the roofs of buildings. They capture sunlight and turn it into electricity.

Renewable Energy -: Renewable energy comes from natural sources that can be replenished, like sunlight, wind, and water. It is better for the environment than using fossil fuels like coal and oil.

Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar program -: The Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar program is an initiative by the Indian government to encourage people to use solar energy in their homes. ‘Surya’ means sun in Hindi, and ‘Ghar’ means home.

State Bank of India (SBI) -: The State Bank of India (SBI) is one of the largest banks in India. It provides financial services to people and businesses.

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) -: NABARD is a bank in India that helps with the development of agriculture and rural areas. It provides loans and support to farmers and rural businesses.

Carbon Emissions -: Carbon emissions are gases like carbon dioxide that are released into the air when we burn fossil fuels. These gases can harm the environment and contribute to global warming.

Energy Efficiency -: Energy efficiency means using less energy to do the same job. It helps save resources and reduces pollution.
