Adani Group’s Vizhinjam Port to Boost Indian Trade, Says CEO Karan Adani

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], July 12: The Adani Group’s Vizhinjam port is set to reduce logistics costs and time for Indian manufacturers, according to Adani Ports and SEZ’s CEO Karan Adani. He stated that the port could cut transit time by 30-40%, making Indian manufacturers more competitive globally. Additionally, logistics costs are expected to decrease by 4-5%.

Adani Ports and SEZ recently welcomed the first mother ship at Vizhinjam port, marking India’s entry into global transshipment. This milestone positions Vizhinjam as a key player in international trade routes. Karan Adani mentioned plans to complete further phases of the port, aiming for a total capacity of 5 million TEUs.

Despite challenges in developing the greenfield site, Adani emphasized the importance of working with local communities and employing local youth. The port aims to be one of the most technologically advanced in South Asia, with aspirations for 100% local operation.

The project has received support from all political parties, including BJP, Congress, and the Left. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan celebrated the port’s inauguration, highlighting its significance for Kerala and India. The port is expected to create over 5,000 jobs and represents a major public-private partnership investment.

Vizhinjam International Seaport will handle large ships with modern equipment and automation. The port will play a crucial role in transshipment traffic, connecting major trade routes between the US, Europe, Africa, and the Far East. Adani Ports and SEZ operates multiple ports across India and is developing additional ports in Sri Lanka, Israel, and Tanzania.
