Actor Vijay Pays Tribute to Periyar on His 146th Birth Anniversary in Chennai

Actor Vijay, who is also the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), paid floral tribute to Periyar, known as the ‘father of the Dravidian movement’, on his 146th birth anniversary. The tribute took place at Periyar Thidal in Chennai.

This marks the first time Vijay has paid tribute to a leader as a politician. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also paid floral tribute to Periyar at Anna Salai in Chennai.

The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) party praised Vijay for his gesture. VCK MP Thol. Thirumavalavan posted on X, saying, “I appreciate and congratulate Actor Vijay, President of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. The fact that Father Periyar’s statue was showered with flowers on Social Justice Day, his birthday, shows that he is for the marginalized and that equality is his goal.”

However, BJP leader Tamilisai Soundarajan criticized Vijay’s political stance, stating that Tamil Nadu does not need another party that imitates the DMK. She mentioned, “We thought brother Vijay’s journey would be different. But so prior he has shown his policy by not wishing for Vinayagar Chaturthi and speaking about two-language policy.”

Earlier this year, Vijay officially announced the name of his political party as ‘Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’ (TVK). He expressed his gratitude to the Tamil people, stating that they gave him everything, and he wanted to give back to them.

Vijay is known for his performances in films such as ‘Theri’, ‘Master’, ‘Bigil’, ‘Beast’, ‘Puli’, ‘Thuppakki’, ‘Mersal’, and ‘Kaththi’. He will next be seen in the film ‘The Greatest of All Time’.
