Actor Mohanlal Visits Landslide-Hit Wayanad Village in Kerala
Wayanad (Kerala), August 3 – Actor Mohanlal visited the landslide-affected Mundakkai village in Kerala’s Wayanad on Saturday. Mohanlal, who is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army, was seen in his Army uniform as he met with the rescue teams working on-site.
The actor, who was given the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2009, praised the rescue personnel and thanked the 122 Infantry Battalion, TA Madras, for their efforts. He also donated Rs 25 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund.
The landslides, which occurred on July 30 in Chooralmala and Mundakkai, have resulted in 308 deaths, according to Kerala Health Minister Veena George. So far, 215 bodies and 143 body parts have been recovered, including 98 males, 87 females, and 30 children. Post-mortem procedures have been completed on 212 bodies and 140 body parts, with 148 bodies identified by relatives.
Currently, 82 people are receiving treatment in various hospitals in Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram districts. A total of 504 people were brought to hospitals from the disaster area, and 205 have been discharged. Three unidentified bodies were cremated at Kalpetta public crematorium following special guidelines prepared by the state government.
Several officials, including Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Department Minister OR Kelu, Kalpetta MLA T Siddique, and District Collector DR Meghasree, paid their last respects to the victims. Residents of the affected area shared their grief and fear, with many having lost friends and family members.
Relief teams, along with a dog squad, began search operations at 7 am today. The Indian Army is also present, constructing a bridge in the Punchirimattom region to facilitate the search and rescue operations. Air Marshal B Manikantan and Brigadier Salil conducted an aerial survey to assess the situation.
On the request of the Kerala government, specialized radar equipment and operators are being airlifted from Delhi to assist in the search operations. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan highlighted the bravery of the rescue teams, noting that six lives were saved from a remote tribal settlement after an 8-hour operation by forest officials.
