Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], August 31: Achanta Sharath Kamal thrilled the home crowd by defeating Mihai Bobocica, helping Athlead Goa Challengers secure a 9-6 win over Chennai Lions in the Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) 2024 match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Saturday.

This victory moved Athlead Goa Challengers to the joint second spot on the league table with 29 points, while Chennai Lions are fourth with 25 points. Sharath Kamal won 2-1 (11-6, 11-10, 6-11) against Bobocica, who managed to take one point from the veteran Indian player.

The UTT league is promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani under the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI). Sakura Mori of Chennai Lions maintained her undefeated streak by beating Yangzi Liu 2-1 (11-9, 11-9, 9-11). However, Liu, along with Harmeet Desai, won the mixed doubles match against Sharath and Sakura 3-0 (11-9, 11-10, 11-7).

Desai further strengthened Athlead Goa Challengers’ lead by defeating Jules Rolland 2-1 (6-11, 11-7, 11-5). Yashaswini Ghorpade also contributed by beating Mouma Das 2-1 (11-5, 11-8, 3-11).

In another match, PBG Bengaluru Smashers edged out Ahmedabad SG Pipers 9-6. Bernadette Szocs of Romania avenged her 2024 Paris Olympics defeat to Manika Batra by winning their women’s singles match. Despite this, PBG Bengaluru Smashers topped the league table with 41 points.

Lilian Bardet gave Ahmedabad SG Pipers a strong start by defeating Anthony Amalraj 2-1 (11-9, 11-10, 10-11). Bernadette and Manush Shah won the mixed doubles match against Manika and Alvaro Robles 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-8). Robles then won the men’s singles match against Shah 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-8), and Lily Zhang secured the final victory by defeating Krittwika Sinha Roy 3-0 (11-5, 11-8, 11-10).

Yangzi Liu was named the Foreign player of the tie, and Harmeet Desai was named the Indian player of the tie.
