Accusations and Protests in Kolkata: The RG Kar Medical College Case
A major development has emerged in the case of a second-year medical student from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, who was tragically raped and murdered. The main accused, Sanjay Roy, claims he has been falsely implicated and accuses former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal of conspiring against him. Roy, while being transported from Sealdah Court, vocally alleged that Goyal and other high-ranking officers threatened him.
On November 4, the Sealdah Court formally charged Roy under sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sahita, marking a significant step in the legal proceedings. The case has garnered widespread attention due to its severity, prompting junior doctors to demand a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and capital punishment for those responsible. Dr. Rajdeep, a junior doctor, emphasized that protests will persist until justice is achieved.
Previously, on October 22, junior doctors ended a hunger strike after discussions with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Following the protests, IPS officer Manoj Kumar Verma was appointed as the new Commissioner of Police, replacing Vineet Kumar Goyal. The incident, which occurred on August 9, has sparked protests across West Bengal, with doctors nationwide showing support for their colleagues in Kolkata.
