Abu Dhabi’s New Recycling Units Reward Bus Riders for Plastic Bottles
Abu Dhabi Mobility (AD Mobility) has introduced two new recycling units in Al Ain and Al Dhafra. This initiative, launched in 2022, encourages public bus users to recycle plastic bottles in exchange for points redeemable for bus fares.
The project is a collaboration with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and Cycled Technologies, a company that specializes in smart recycling stations and reverse vending machines (RVM) in the UAE. Individuals can deposit empty plastic bottles into these devices at main bus stations and earn points for each bottle.
Points are collected digitally through the Cycled Rewards app. Each small bottle (600 ml or less) earns 1 point, and each large bottle (over 600 ml) earns 2 points. Every point is worth 10 fils, with 10 points equating to AED1. These points are converted into credit on a Hafilat personal card, which can be used to pay for bus fares through the automated payment system on public buses.
