A street in Abu Dhabi has been named in honor of Dr. George Matthew, a UAE citizen of Indian origin, for his remarkable contributions to the healthcare sector over nearly 60 years. Dr. Matthew, now 84, first arrived in the UAE in 1967 and has played a pivotal role in shaping Abu Dhabi’s healthcare system.

Early Days and Contributions

Dr. Matthew was the first doctor to work in a government hospital in Al Ain. He arrived in the UAE when the country was still developing, inspired by the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed, the founder of the nation. Despite the lack of infrastructure, he dedicated himself to improving the healthcare system.

Recognition and Honors

To acknowledge his contributions, a road near Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in the Al Mafraq area has been named George Matthew Street. This is part of the ‘Honouring UAE’s Visionaries: Commemorative Streets’ project by the Department of Municipalities and Transport.

Career Highlights

Dr. Matthew started as a general practitioner and held various prestigious positions, including Medical Director of the Al Ain region and Consultant for the Health Authority. He also served the royal family and was granted UAE citizenship in 2004. In 2018, he won the Abu Dhabi Award.

Personal Life and Legacy

Originally from Kerala, India, Dr. Matthew moved to the UAE with his wife, Valsa. Their daughter, Maryam, works in the government sector. Dr. Matthew continues to work in the private health department under Presidential Affairs and remains dedicated to serving the country.
