Abhidhamma Divas Celebrates Pali Language and Buddha’s Teachings in New Delhi

The International Buddhist Confederation celebrated the declaration of Pali as a classical language on ‘Abhidhamma Divas’ in New Delhi. The event, held at Vigyan Bhawan, aimed to preserve the ancient Pali language and sacred Buddhist texts. It began with lighting lamps and offering flowers to Buddha, followed by a film screening and chanting by monks.

Abhidhamma Divas marks the descent of Lord Buddha from the celestial realm after teaching Abhidhamma. Pali, closely linked to Buddhism, is studied for deeper understanding of the religion. Abhijit Halder, Director General of the International Buddhist Confederation, emphasized the importance of Pali’s classical status, encouraging youth engagement and international exchanges.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers, and around 2,000 delegates and monks worldwide. A student praised the initiative for reviving ancient culture, highlighting the need to preserve languages like Pali, Sanskrit, and Prakrit. Dr. Damenda Porage, Deputy Secretary General at IBC, noted India’s role in spreading peace through Buddha’s teachings.
