AAP MP Sanjay Singh Responds to Supreme Court’s Opinion on SC/ST Creamy Layer
New Delhi, India – August 1: AAP MP Sanjay Singh reacted to the Supreme Court’s opinion on the need for identifying creamy layers in SC/STs. He emphasized that the basis of reservation is caste discrimination and social injustice, not economic status. Singh stated, “Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, a highly educated person of his era, faced social injustice, which is the core issue of reservation for SC/ST and OBC.”
Singh criticized Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s directive for eateries to display owners’ names, claiming it oppresses Muslim minorities and Dalits. He said, “If the name of the hotel is Valmiki dhaba, it will be shunned. Those who have suffered injustice due to discrimination should get social justice.”
Singh also mentioned that high-ranking officials are spreading societal hatred, citing the exclusion of President Ram Nath Kovind and President Droupadi Murmu from significant ceremonies as examples of ongoing social discrimination.
The Supreme Court’s seven-judge bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, suggested sub-classification within SC/STs and identifying creamy layers. Justice BR Gavai expressed the need for a state policy to identify the creamy layer among SCs and STs. The judgment, delivered by a 6:1 majority, overruled an earlier decision that SCs and STs form homogenous classes.
