AAP MP Sanjay Singh Challenges Denial to Meet CM Arvind Kejriwal in Tihar Jail
Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh has taken his case to the Delhi High Court, claiming that he was not allowed to meet Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Tihar Jail. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna has asked Tihar Jail Authorities to respond by September 9, 2024.
Senior Advocate Rahul Mehra, representing Sanjay Singh, argued that the jail authorities denied permission based on Rule 588 of the Delhi Prison Rules, 2018, labeling Singh as an ‘ex-prisoner’ without providing written reasons. The plea states that the term ‘ex-prisoner’ is not defined in the Delhi Prisons Act, 2000, or the Delhi Prisons Rules, 2018, and that the denial violates Singh’s fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
The plea also mentions that Sanjay Singh had promised to follow all prison rules during his visit, as stated in emails dated June 4 and June 6, 2024, but was still denied permission.
