Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the National Conference, expressed confidence in winning the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections as the first phase of voting began on Wednesday. He mentioned that the Union Territory had been waiting for this day for 10 years.

Abdullah said, “It is a very good thing, we want the people to vote for National Conference as it will benefit J&K. I spoke to some people, National Conference is getting a lot of votes from all sections. We are hopeful that we will win. We have been waiting for this day for 10 years. We will wait for October 8, but so far the reports are good.”

Abdullah is contesting from the Ganderbal and Budgam assembly constituencies. The National Conference and the Congress party are fighting the assembly polls together, with support from the Samajwadi Party.

The first phase of voting saw a cumulative voter turnout of 11.11% as of 9 am, according to the Election Commission of India. Specific turnouts included Kishtwar at 14.83%, Doda at 12.90%, Ramban at 11.91%, Shopian at 11.44%, Kulgam at 10.77%, Anantnag at 10.26%, and Pulwama at 9.18%.

Polling began at 7 am and will conclude at 6 pm. In this phase, 24 assembly constituencies are voting, including 16 seats in the Kashmir region and 8 seats in the Jammu region. The second and third phases will be held on September 25 and October 1, respectively, with vote counting on October 8.
