Jairam Ramesh Criticizes Modi Government’s First 100 Days for Job Crisis
New Delhi, September 17: Congress general secretary in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, criticized the BJP government for its first 100 days, calling it ‘unstable and crisis-ridden.’ In a statement on X, he highlighted the government’s failure to create sufficient employment.
Ramesh cited the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) India Employment Report, 2024, which found almost zero growth in employment between 2012 and 2019. He noted that unemployment was very high among urban youth (17.2%) and rural youth (10.6%) in 2022.
He further criticized the government for increasing low-paying informal-sector jobs while formal employment decreased from 10.5% to 9.7% from 2019 to 2022. Citigroup confirmed this trend, noting that only 21% of India’s labor force has salaried jobs, lower than the pre-Covid 24%.
Ramesh also claimed that the number of workers in the agricultural sector has increased, indicating a move from factories back to farming, which he attributed to economic mismanagement under Modi’s leadership.
