Amit Shah Renames Port Blair to Sri Vijaya Puram

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Friday that Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has been renamed to ‘Sri Vijaya Puram’.

Reason for the Change

Shah explained that the previous name had a colonial legacy, while the new name symbolizes the victory achieved in India’s freedom struggle. He said, ‘Inspired by the vision of PM @narendramodi Ji, to free the nation from the colonial imprints, today we have decided to rename Port Blair as ‘Sri Vijaya Puram.’ While the earlier name had a colonial legacy, Sri Vijaya Puram symbolises the victory achieved in our freedom struggle and the A&N Islands’ unique role in the same.’

Historical Significance

Shah highlighted the significant role of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India’s history. He mentioned that the islands once served as the naval base of the Chola Empire and are now poised to be a critical base for strategic and development aspirations. The islands are also notable for being the site of the first unfurling of the Indian flag by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the location of the cellular jail where Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters were imprisoned.
