U.S. Invests $70 Million in India’s Health, Housing, and Small Businesses

The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) has announced new investments totaling $70 million in India’s private sector. These investments aim to advance key priorities of both the U.S. and Indian governments, including strengthening health systems, expanding access to affordable housing, and increasing support for small businesses.

Health Sector Investment

DFC Deputy CEO Nisha Biswal signed a ceremonial commitment for a $20 million loan to Panacea Biotec Limited. This loan will help expand the production of Panacea’s hexavalent vaccine, which protects children against six diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis, hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type B. The expansion will enable Panacea to produce approximately 70 million doses annually.

Affordable Housing and Small Business Support

DFC is also investing up to $50 million in Vastu Housing Finance Corporation Limited. This investment will finance the expansion of Vastu’s mortgage and home lending services in India. The project is expected to provide affordable home loans to over 2,200 Indians, with more than 95% of the loans supporting women as the sole borrower or co-borrower. Additionally, Vastu will offer around 1,000 loans to small businesses, primarily owned or led by women.

DFC’s Broader Engagement

India is a cornerstone of DFC’s engagement with the Indo-Pacific region and the rest of the world. As of FY2023, DFC has invested approximately $3.8 billion in India, including $820 million in new investments made last year. Over the past three years, DFC has more than doubled its investments in the Indo-Pacific to over $9.5 billion, making it the fastest-growing region for DFC. The organization is working with India to address global challenges across various sectors, including energy, health, and small business financing.
