Sandip Ghosh’s Home Searched by Enforcement Directorate in Kolkata
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) visited the residence of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, located at Chinar Park in Kolkata. This search operation is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the college.
Judicial Custody and Arrest
On September 10, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court remanded Sandip Ghosh and three others to judicial custody until September 23. Ghosh was arrested by the CBI on September 2 following allegations of corruption and financial misconduct at the institution.
High Court Orders and Investigations
The investigation was initiated based on a directive from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, which ordered the CBI to probe the matter. An official FIR was registered by the CBI against Ghosh on August 24. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Kolkata also suspended Ghosh’s membership amid the ongoing investigation.
Rape-Murder Case
In addition to the financial irregularities case, the CBI is also investigating the rape-murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The woman was found dead in the seminar hall of the college on August 9. The Calcutta High Court has given the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on this investigation, due on September 17.
Supreme Court Decision
On Friday, the Supreme Court refused to entertain Sandip Ghosh’s plea against the Calcutta High Court’s decision to order a CBI probe into the corruption case. The court stated that Ghosh does not have the standing to intervene in the public interest litigation alleging financial irregularities. Ghosh’s lawyer argued that connecting him with the RG Kar rape incident is unjust, but the court maintained that it is a matter of investigation.
