Amit Shah Re-elected as Chairperson of Parliamentary Committee on Official Language
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been unanimously re-elected as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language. The decision was made during a meeting held in New Delhi. Shah, who first became chairperson in 2019, expressed his gratitude to the committee members for their support.
In his address, Shah highlighted the efforts made over the last 75 years to promote Hindi as the official language. He noted that in the last decade, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the committee has worked to make Hindi a friend of all local languages, ensuring it does not compete with them. Shah emphasized the importance of consensus and agreement in accepting Hindi as the language of government work.
Shah also mentioned the creation of a Shabdkosh (dictionary) that includes thousands of words from local languages, enriching Hindi and strengthening its relationship with other languages. He announced the development of a software to automatically translate all languages of the 8th Schedule, which will further promote the use of Hindi in government work.
The Home Minister stressed the need for cooperation and acceptance, aiming for all government work to be conducted in Indian languages by 2047. He highlighted the contributions of freedom fighters who recognized the need for a common language for communication between states. Shah concluded by emphasizing the importance of integrating Hindi with new age technologies and the new education policy, which prioritizes mother tongues.
The Parliamentary Committee on Official Language, established under the Official Languages Act, 1963, comprises 30 members of Parliament. The meeting was attended by newly appointed MPs from the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, as well as officials from the Department of Official Language, led by Secretary Anshuli Arya.
