On Friday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar congratulated Maris Sangiampongsa on his re-appointment as the Foreign Minister of Thailand. Jaishankar expressed his eagerness to continue strengthening the partnership between India and Thailand. He shared his congratulations in a post on X, saying, ‘Congratulate Maris Sangiampongsa on his re-appointment as the Foreign Minister of Thailand. Looking forward to continue deepening our close and multifaceted partnership.’

Prime Minister Modi Congratulates Paetongtarn Shinawatra

Earlier, on August 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Paetongtarn Shinawatra on her election as the Prime Minister of Thailand. Modi wished her a successful tenure and expressed his desire to work together to enhance the bilateral ties between India and Thailand. In his post on X, Modi said, ‘Congratulations Paetongtarn Shinawatra on your election as the Prime Minister of Thailand. Best wishes for a very successful tenure. Look forward to working with you to further strengthen the bilateral ties between India and Thailand, that are based on the strong foundations of civilisational, cultural and people to people connect.’

Shinawatra’s Response

Paetongtarn Shinawatra thanked Prime Minister Modi for his warm wishes and expressed her enthusiasm for strengthening the relationship between Thailand and India. She shared her gratitude in a post on X, stating, ‘Thank you PM @narendramodi for your warm congratulatory message. I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our bilateral relations, especially in the areas of trade and investment, culture, people-to-people contact, and tourism, in particular, to increase air travel between both countries.’ She added, ‘I am confident that we can build upon our existing ties and explore untapped potentials to create even greater opportunities for our two countries, peoples and beyond.’

Political Changes in Thailand

Shinawatra’s appointment comes after a series of political changes in Thailand, where the Constitutional Court ousted her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, from the Pheu Thai party.
