In Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah criticized PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti for her decision to contest against the INDIA bloc partners in the Lok Sabha polls and for not campaigning in Jammu. He mentioned that they were open to seat-sharing talks in the assembly elections if she was willing to help the alliance, but it was not acceptable to her.

Omar Abdullah explained that the Gupkar alliance, which includes National Conference, PDP, CPI-M, and other parties, never came together as an electoral alliance. He stated that Mehbooba Mufti consciously chose to field candidates against the INDIA bloc in the Parliament elections, despite his discussions with the Congress party about seat-sharing.

He also mentioned that the Gupkar alliance is about ideology and a common fight, not just elections. The alliance opposed the abrogation of Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, by the BJP-led NDA government in August 2019.

Omar Abdullah responded to a query about Sajjad Lone’s remarks on the Gupkar alliance’s stature, saying that a party’s stature is determined by the people, not by the BJP or the media. He claimed that Sajjad Lone would have lost his deposit in the Lok Sabha polls in Baramulla if the BJP had not transferred migrant votes to him.

The Congress and National Conference are fighting the assembly polls in alliance, with NC contesting 51 of 90 seats and Congress contesting 32. Polling in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with votes counted on October 8.
