Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia Join Congress Party
New Delhi, India – Wrestler Vinesh Phogat expressed her pride as she joined the Congress party on Friday. She mentioned that the party understood their pain and tears during the protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar last year. Phogat and fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia joined the Congress party in the presence of Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, party leader Pawan Khera, Haryana Congress chief Udai Bhan, and AICC in-charge of Haryana, Deepak Babaria.

Phogat recalled the days of the protest, stating that she tried her best to inspire women and young girls through wrestling. She mentioned that despite various accusations from the BJP IT cell, she continued to compete at the national and international levels, including the Olympics. She believes that her new role in the Congress party is a blessed opportunity to serve the people of her country.
Bajrang Punia’s Support
Wrestler Bajrang Punia also joined the Congress party and expressed his commitment to strengthening the party and the nation. He criticized the BJP IT cell for their accusations and stated that they had reached out to all women BJP MPs for support but received none. Punia emphasized that they will work hard to raise the voices of women and strengthen the Congress party.
Background
Both wrestlers were part of protests against former BJP MP and then Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations last year. Earlier in the day, they met with Congress national President Mallikarjun Kharge. This development comes ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections scheduled for October 5, with vote counting on October 8. Both wrestlers resigned from their positions in Northern Railways earlier in the day. Punia won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Games, while Phogat became the first woman wrestler to reach the Olympics final. Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling after being disqualified from the Paris Olympic Games for being overweight in her 50-kg category weigh-in.
