Supreme Court Rejects Sandip Ghosh’s Plea in RG Kar Medical College Case

The Supreme Court of India has refused to entertain the plea of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, against the Calcutta High Court’s decision to order a CBI probe into a corruption case. Ghosh objected to the adverse remarks made against him by the High Court.

Supreme Court’s Decision

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra rejected Ghosh’s plea, stating that he does not have the standing to intervene in the public interest litigation alleging financial irregularities.

Ghosh’s Objections

Ghosh’s counsel argued that he is not against the CBI investigation but objected to the observations made against him by the Calcutta High Court. The court noted that Ghosh was the principal of RG Kar Medical College when the incidents took place and that it is a matter for investigation.

CBI and ED Investigations

The Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to submit a progress report on the investigation. Following the High Court’s orders, the CBI registered an FIR against Ghosh on August 24. The Indian Medical Association of Kolkata suspended Ghosh’s membership amid the CBI probe. The CBI also conducted a second round of polygraph tests on Ghosh as part of their investigation into the rape-murder of a woman doctor at the institution.

On Friday, the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) raided Ghosh’s residence and other locations in Kolkata in connection with financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The ED registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to investigate money laundering charges against Ghosh. Ghosh is currently in CBI custody.
