Rescue Efforts in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: Over 18,000 People Evacuated
Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) [India], September 6: Sanjeev Kumar Jindal, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, briefed the press on the ongoing flood situation and rescue efforts in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Rescue Operations
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) have been actively involved in rescue and relief operations. In Andhra Pradesh, over 350 people have been rescued and 15,000 evacuated. In Telangana, 60 people have been rescued and 3,200 evacuated. The teams are also providing pre-hospital treatment and distributing food and relief materials.
Timely Alerts and Expert Assessments
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Central Water Commission (CWC) have been issuing timely alerts. A central team of experts, led by Sanjeev Kumar Jindal, is assessing the flood-affected areas, focusing on reservoir management and dam safety.
Infrastructure Damage
Significant breaches have occurred, leading to flooding in Vijayawada. The team visited the Prakasam barrage and the Budameru diversion canal site to assess and fix the breaches.
Government Response
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu highlighted the unprecedented situation and crop damage affecting 2 lakh farmers. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced Rs 5 crore in aid for the flood-hit districts and plans to appeal to the central government to declare the floods a national calamity.
