INTUC Protests for Justice in Kolkata Doctor’s Tragic Case

The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) staged a protest in Kolkata, West Bengal, demanding the death penalty for Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protest was in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the college.

Demands for Justice

Pramod Pandey from INTUC stated, “Today is Teacher’s Day. We demand the death penalty for the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Dr. Sandip Ghosh. He should be given the death penalty immediately. Today 22 to 23 days are over and till now the accused has not been sentenced. A case of forgery has been registered against him. He has not been accused in the main crime yet which happened at the RG Kar Medical Hospital.”

Legal Proceedings

Dr. Sandip Ghosh filed a petition in the Supreme Court against a Calcutta High Court decision that ordered a CBI probe into a graft case against him. His plea is scheduled for September 6 before a bench led by Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud. The Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Dr. Ghosh on September 2 for alleged corruption and financial irregularities at the college and hospital. He was sent to 8-day police custody on Tuesday.

Political Reactions

West Bengal Legislative Assembly Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari wrote to President of India Droupadi Murmu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting the withdrawal of the President’s Police Medal and Police Medal conferred upon Vineet Goyal, the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata. Adhikari accused Goyal of shameful conduct during the investigation into the rape and murder of the trainee doctor.

In a post on X, Adhikari shared, “I have written a letter to the President of India Droupadi Murmu Ji requesting her to withdraw/forfeit the prestigious President’s Police Medal and Police Medal conferred upon Vineet Goyal; IPS, (West Bengal: RR – 1994), presently Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, in connection with his reprehensible, deplorable and shameful conduct during the course of investigations into the rape and murder of the Resident Doctor of RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata.”

Family’s Accusations

The victim’s family accused the Kolkata Police of offering them money while they were mourning their daughter’s death. The aunt of the deceased doctor said, “When the body of the daughter was lying in front of the parents in the house, the police were offering money, is this the humanity of the police?” These allegations were made during a media address after the family joined protests at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
