Seven fishermen from Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, have returned to Chennai Airport. They were detained on July 23 for fishing in Sri Lankan waters and were released on August 29 after intervention by the central and state governments.

Details of the Arrest

The fishermen were taken into custody by the Sri Lankan Navy and produced before a court, leading to their imprisonment. The arrest occurred while they were part of a group of 430 mechanized boats fishing off the coast of Rameswaram.

Ongoing Issues

CR Senthilvel, Tamil Nadu Secretary of AITUC Fishing Workers’ Association, confirmed the arrest of eight fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. He highlighted the ongoing problem of Tamil Nadu fishermen being detained, with over 350 arrests this year and incidents of violence, including two murders.

Government Intervention

Last month, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, urging action to secure the release and repatriation of other fishermen detained by the Sri Lankan Navy.
