Sakina Khatun Finishes Seventh in Paris Paralympics Powerlifting

India’s para-athlete Sakina Khatun’s hope for a medal at the Paris Paralympics ended on a bitter note after she finished seventh in the women’s up to 45kg powerlifting final on Wednesday. Khatun successfully lifted 86kg in the first round.

China’s Guo Lingling took the gold with a successful lift of 122kg, breaking her own world record of 121kg set earlier this year in Dubai. Great Britain’s Zoe Newson won the silver medal with a lift of 109kg, and Turkey’s Nazmiye Muslu earned the bronze with a lift of 108kg.

Nine competitors participated in the women’s up to 45kg final, which only involves the bench press. Sakina began the final by lifting 86kg, which was the third-lowest weight submitted in the first round. She initially went to the top of the leaderboard but dropped to the sixth spot after the first round.

In the second round, Sakina submitted 90kg but was unsuccessful as two judges gave a red light. Kazakhstan’s Tursynay Kabyl, who had a ‘no lift’ in the first round, successfully lifted 95kg in the second round, moving past Sakina into sixth place.

Earlier on Wednesday, in the men’s up to 49kg category, India’s Parmjeet Kumar also failed to win a medal, finishing eighth with a best lift of 150kg. Jordan’s Qarada Omar Sami Hamadeh won gold with a lift of 181kg, Turkey’s Abdullah Kayapinar took silver with 180kg, and Vietnam’s Le van Cong earned bronze with 171kg.
