New Delhi, India – Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Anirban Ganguly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation. He called her demand laughable and suggested she might be losing her mental balance under pressure.

On Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee had called for the resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and the chief ministers of states where incidents of rape and sexual abuse were recently reported.

Commenting on the anti-rape bill passed in the West Bengal Assembly, Anirban Ganguly said, “I think it is laughable that yesterday, on the floor of the Assembly, Mamata Banerjee, whose resignation the entire state is demanding, called for the resignation of the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the Health Minister, and the Chief Ministers of other BJP-ruled states. She is perhaps losing her mental balance under pressure and stress.”

Ganguly also criticized Mamata Banerjee’s demand for fast-track courts to ensure speedy justice in rape cases, following the rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata. He pointed out that Union Minister Kiren Rijiju had written a letter in 2021 regarding the establishment of special fast-track courts and POCSO courts, but Mamata Banerjee did not respond.

“The fact is, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s letter, written in May 2021 in response to her earlier letters, clearly informed her that the Centre had made provisions for setting up special fast-track courts and POCSO courts. West Bengal was to establish 123 such courts across districts with a significant backlog of cases. Not only did Mamata Banerjee fail to respond to the letter, but she also lacked the basic decency and courtesy to follow up on the matter. There has been no action on setting up these courts. I think Mamata Banerjee has taken the people of West Bengal, and indeed the entire country, for a ride. She must resign,” he said.

The brutal rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor in Kolkata has triggered protests in West Bengal and across the country. The doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
