People in Kolkata took to the streets on Sunday to express their anger and sadness after a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The protest march began at College Square and moved towards the Dharmatala area.

Protesters held banners saying, ‘I want justice for my sisters.’ TMC leaders and workers also joined the protest, demanding that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) reveal the progress of the investigation and include capital punishment for such crimes in the Constitution.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the National Conference of District Judiciary, highlighted the need for stricter laws for women’s safety. He said, ‘Many strict laws have been made for the safety of women, but we need to make them more active.’

Doctors across different states have been protesting, demanding justice for the victim and better security laws for healthcare professionals. The case has been transferred to the CBI from the Kolkata police, and a hospital volunteer named Sanjay Roy has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The tragic event has caused widespread outrage and demands for better protection for healthcare workers.
