Pakistan Implements Web Monitoring System, Internet Users Face Slowdowns

The Pakistan National Assembly was informed that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has implemented a Web Monitoring System (WMS) to manage internet content by blocking non-compliant applications and websites. This was revealed in response to an inquiry by Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPP) MNA Shahida Rehman.

Over the past few weeks, users across Pakistan have reported significant declines in internet speed, affecting both mobile data and broadband connections. The business community and internet service providers (ISPs) have raised concerns, alleging that the government’s internet monitoring efforts, including a ‘firewall,’ are causing the slowdown.

However, Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja denied any intentional throttling of the internet, attributing the slowdowns to a faulty submarine cable. She confirmed that the government is upgrading its web management system to address cybersecurity threats.

The PTA has blocked 2,369 URLs and 183 mobile applications that were found to be exposing personal data. Despite geo-blocking measures, unlawful content remains accessible through virtual private networks (VPNs). The PTA has also blocked 469 mobile applications in response to complaints, reinforcing its commitment to internet content management.

As the government continues to expand its digital oversight, the impact on internet speed and accessibility remains a contentious issue. While authorities emphasize the need for cybersecurity, the business community and users are concerned about the broader implications for digital freedom and economic activity.
