Football Fans in Kolkata Protest Over Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Death
In Kolkata, fans of football giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan SG, along with supporters of Mohammedan Sporting Club, held a protest on Thursday. They were demonstrating against the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the city.
The tragic incident occurred earlier this month when the trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. This event has sparked widespread protests across West Bengal and other parts of India.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her outrage in an open letter titled ‘Women’s Safety: Enough is Enough.’ She called for self-introspection to address the root causes of crimes against women and emphasized the need to honor the memory of victims to make society more vigilant.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently probing the case. They have conducted polygraph tests on Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and the arrested accused, Sanjay Roy. The investigation was taken over by the CBI following directions from the Calcutta High Court.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ordered the security of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Additionally, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has suspended the membership of Sandip Ghosh.
