New Delhi, August 29: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has criticized the Modi government for failing to ensure women’s safety. He emphasized the need for equal rights for women rather than just protection under the ‘Beti Bachao’ initiative.

Kharge questioned whether the recommendations of the Justice Verma Committee and the provisions of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act have been fully implemented. He highlighted the alarming statistics of crimes against women, noting that every hour 43 crimes are recorded, and every day 22 crimes are registered against women and children from vulnerable communities.

In a social media post, Kharge called for serious reforms to ensure women’s safety, including the introduction of a Gender Sensitisation Curriculum, Gender Budgeting, and basic facilities like street lights and public women’s washrooms. He stressed the importance of creating a fear-free environment for women through police and judicial reforms.

Kharge criticized the Modi government for not taking effective measures to ensure women’s safety, despite Prime Minister Modi’s speeches on the issue. He accused the government of trying to hide crimes and questioned whether the criminal justice system has improved.

Kharge’s remarks come in the wake of the murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which has caused national outrage and led to many rallies across the country.
