US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan Meets Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing
On Wednesday, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. They discussed maintaining strong communication and advancing cooperation in areas like drug control, law enforcement, migration, and climate action.
Sullivan arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a three-day visit. Chinese Ambassador to the US, Xie Feng, shared on social media that the two sides agreed to continue implementing important agreements made at a previous meeting in San Francisco. They also plan to hold a video call between military leaders and a second round of China-US intergovernmental dialogue on AI.
This visit is significant as Sullivan is the first US national security advisor to visit China in eight years. The last visit was by Susan Rice during President Barack Obama’s term in 2016. White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby mentioned that this trip marks the fifth meeting between Sullivan and Wang, highlighting the importance of their communication in managing competition and tension between the two countries.
Sullivan’s visit was discussed by President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping at the Woodside Summit in November 2023. This visit comes ahead of the US presidential elections in November this year.
