Din Tai Fung Closes 14 Restaurants in China Due to Economic Slowdown
Din Tai Fung, a renowned Michelin-starred Taiwanese restaurant famous for its dumplings, is closing over a dozen locations in China. This decision comes as China’s economy, the world’s second-largest, experiences a slowdown.
Closure Details
Beijing Hengtai Feng Catering Company, a subsidiary of Din Tai Fung, announced the closure of all 14 restaurants in northern China, including one in Xiamen. However, the 18 remaining restaurants in eastern China, operated by a Shanghai-based partner, will continue to function normally.
Impact on Employees
The closure will affect around 800 employees. Din Tai Fung has assured that severance and placement for these employees will be handled properly. The company expressed apologies for the inconvenience and disappointment caused to their loyal customers.

Darson Chiu, a Taiwan-based economist, noted that weak consumer spending in China is affecting high-end brands like Din Tai Fung. He explained that while there is still traffic, the consumption power is weak, especially in the restaurant service industry.
