Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika Condemns Mamata Banerjee’s Remarks on Assam
Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 28: Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika strongly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her statement, ‘If Bengal burns, so will Assam.’ Speaking on Wednesday, Minister Hazarika defended Assam’s governance and emphasized the state’s resistance to external threats.
“She can’t bully, she can’t threaten us. She can’t control law and order in her state and is threatening us. It will not happen in Assam, I am assuring you,” Hazarika stated. He urged Banerjee to maintain decorum befitting her long tenure as Chief Minister. “I would like to request Mamata Banerjee, she is a very senior leader and a long-time CM, she should know how to speak in public. I seriously condemn it,” he added.
Hazarika assured that under the current BJP government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam would not be influenced by external pressures. “I can assure you she can’t do anything in Assam until the BJP govt is here and Himanta Biswa Sarma is the CM,” he asserted.
Earlier, Assam CM Sharma responded to Banerjee, saying, “Didi, how dare you threaten Assam? Don’t show us red eyes. Don’t even try to burn India with your politics of failure. It does not suit you to speak divisive language.”
Banerjee, during a public function in Kolkata, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using his party to incite violence in Bengal over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. She warned that if Bengal burns, other states including Assam, North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi would also burn, and Modi’s position would be at risk.
BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi accused Banerjee of threatening doctors by stating that FIRs would not be registered against protesting doctors following the Kolkata incident. He criticized the police action on protestors and called Banerjee’s statement a “new strategy to threaten” doctors.
West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing Banerjee of advocating violence and inciting gatherings. He called for immediate attention to Banerjee’s statements made during her address to the Student Wing of TMC in Kolkata.
The brutal rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9 sparked nationwide outrage and protests demanding justice for the victim.
