Junior Doctors and BJP Protest in Kolkata Over Tragic Incident at RG Kar Medical College

On August 28, junior doctors in Kolkata held a protest rally demanding justice for a fellow doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The rally was organized by the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum and coincided with a 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh’ called by the BJP.

Dr. Mazumder of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital stated, “Earlier our protest march was only for doctors, but today we have called everyone to join us…Yesterday, none of our doctors were present…”

In addition to the doctors’ rally, BJP workers staged a protest in Asansol, blocking railway tracks. Union Minister and state BJP President Sukanta Majumdar joined the protests in Kolkata’s Baguiati. He announced a seven-day dharna starting August 29, following permission from the Kolkata High Court. Majumdar criticized the police for allegedly targeting BJP protesters while failing to arrest the accused in the rape-murder case.

On August 27, chaos erupted in Kolkata as security personnel used tear gas, water cannons, and lathi-charge to disperse protesters on Howrah Bridge. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers also protested against the BJP’s ‘Bengal Bandh,’ accusing the BJP of trying to create anarchy in Bengal.
