Nandigram (West Bengal) [India], August 28: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh responded to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) call for a 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh’ on Wednesday. He stated that the people of West Bengal have rejected what he called the “drama of anarchy.”

The BJP called for the bandh to protest against the state government after police used lathi charge and tear gas on protestors during the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ rally in Kolkata. Ghosh described the bandh as a “failed attempt” to create unrest, asserting that everything is normal in the state.

“We all want justice in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case. Mamata Banerjee also wants justice. The case is now in CBI’s hands. One accused has been arrested, and the CBI is investigating the matter,” Ghosh said. He accused the BJP of trying to create anarchy, noting that they attacked the police and called for the bandh. “The people of West Bengal have rejected BJP’s bandh,” he added.

Ghosh further mentioned that the industrial belt was functioning normally, with more than 82 percent of work ongoing in the morning shift. “Shops are open, tea garden employees are working, the IT sector has 100 percent attendance, and transport is functioning,” he said.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari joined the BJP protest. Authorities have tightened security in Kolkata in response to the bandh call, with police personnel deployed to maintain law and order. Dendup Sherpa, Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) of Uttar Dinajpur, stated that police are stationed everywhere to ensure safety.

Anticipating violence, the administration instructed drivers and conductors of government buses in Kolkata to wear helmets. Drivers of North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) buses were seen wearing helmets in Cooch Behar.

On August 27, chaos erupted in Kolkata as security personnel used tear gas, water cannons, and lathi charge to disperse protestors on the Howrah Bridge. Protestors clashed with police, breaking and dragging away barricades during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ march. The TMC blamed the BJP for orchestrating the chaos.

The murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital caused national outrage, leading to many rallies across the country.
