BJP Announces Candidates for Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its first list of 44 candidates for the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The announcement was made after a meeting of the BJP Central Election Committee chaired by JP Nadda, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah in attendance.

  • Gajay Singh Rana from Doda
  • Arshid Bhat from Rajpora
  • Sushri Shagun Parihar from Kishtwar
  • Pawan Gupta from Udhampur West
  • Dr. Devinder Kumar Maniyal from Ramgarh (SC)
  • Mohan Lal Bhagat from Akhnoor
  • Rohit Dubey from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi
  • Chowdhary Abdul Ghani from Poonch Haveli

Election Details

The elections will be conducted in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes scheduled for October 4. Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 90 assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for SCs and 9 seats for STs. The region has 88.06 lakh eligible voters.

Historical Context

In the last assembly elections, the PDP won 28 seats, the BJP won 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference won 15, and the Congress won 12. The PDP and BJP formed a coalition government led by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. However, the BJP withdrew its support in 2018 after Mehbooba Mufti took over following Sayeed’s demise. These are the first assembly elections in the region since the abrogation of Article 370.

BJP -: BJP stands for Bharatiya Janata Party. It is one of the major political parties in India.

Jammu and Kashmir -: Jammu and Kashmir is a region in northern India. It used to be a state but is now a Union Territory.

Assembly Elections -: Assembly elections are when people vote to choose their representatives in the state or regional government.

Syed Wazahat -: Syed Wazahat is a person who is running as a candidate in the elections from a place called Anantnag.

Kuldeep Raj Dubey -: Kuldeep Raj Dubey is another candidate running in the elections, but from a place called Reasi.

Phases -: Phases mean that the elections will happen on different days in different areas. In this case, there are three phases.

Abrogation of Article 370 -: Abrogation of Article 370 means that a special law giving Jammu and Kashmir more autonomy was removed. This happened in 2019.
