CBI Finds Evidence Against Former RG Kar Medical College Principal Sandeep Ghosh

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Anti-Corruption Branch has announced that they have found substantial evidence in their corruption investigation against former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandeep Ghosh. A CBI official confirmed, “…there is a lot.”

The CBI began their investigation by filing an FIR on Saturday. This followed a decision by the Calcutta High Court on Friday to transfer the investigation of financial irregularities involving Dr. Sandip Ghosh from a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI. The decision came after a petition by Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the hospital, who accused Dr. Ghosh of financial misconduct and unethical practices.

The High Court has given the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation, due on September 17. In a related case, CBI officials conducted a polygraph test on Sanjay Roy, who was arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at the hospital.

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar and other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers protested at Shyambazar against the incident. Additionally, Parimal Dey, a teacher from Alipurduar who received the Banga Ratna award from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2019, has decided to return the award in protest of the state government’s response to the incident. Dey stated, “I have decided to return the Banga Ratna award. Given the protests that have occurred in Bengal and beyond, my conscience dictates that I should give it back. I support the protest. The way she (Mamata Banerjee) is running the administration is not right.”

The West Bengal Motion Picture Artists’ Forum also staged a protest in Tollygunge, demanding justice for the victim and urging the Kolkata administration to take responsibility. The Supreme Court has ordered that the security of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) while hearing the case concerning the rape and murder of the trainee doctor, who was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9.
