Lobsang Sangay Praises India and US for Supporting Tibet

Former Tibetan Prime Minister-in-Exile Lobsang Sangay called the US Congressional delegation’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar ‘politically and symbolically very important.’ He thanked the Indian government for supporting the US delegation that came to back Tibet.

Prime Minister Modi met with a bipartisan US Congressional delegation led by Congressman Michael McCaul. Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was part of the delegation. On June 19, the delegation met Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama in Dharamshala.

Sangay emphasized that no country has supported Tibetans more than India. He stated, ‘If India speaks, the world will listen.’ He also highlighted the US’s strong message of unity on Tibet, despite internal divisions.

Sangay criticized China’s interference in Tibet, calling it an ‘uninvited guest.’ He praised Nancy Pelosi as a great friend of Tibetans and supported the US Congress’s Resolve Tibet Act, which urges China to re-engage with Tibetan leaders.

Sangay expressed hope that US President Joe Biden would meet the Dalai Lama during his visit to the US for medical purposes, noting that previous presidents had met with him.
