Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 23: Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar expressed his approval of the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the investigation of financial irregularities and unethical practices at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The investigation was previously handled by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Majumdar stated, “I welcome this judgement… CBI will start conducting an inquiry into this from tomorrow.” He further mentioned that a significant scam had occurred and implicated close associates of Mamata Banerjee in the scandal. He also suggested that the Enforcement Directorate should investigate any money trails.

The court’s decision came in response to a petition filed by Dr. Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the hospital, who accused Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal, of financial misconduct and unethical practices. Dr. Ali had previously reported the corruption to the Chief Minister, but his complaint was redirected to the principal.

Earlier today, the Calcutta High Court granted permission for the CBI to conduct a polygraph test on Dr. Sandip Ghosh and five others involved in the case. These individuals include four doctors who had dinner with the deceased doctor on the night of the incident and one civic volunteer.

Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj ordered the SIT to hand over all investigation documents to the CBI by 10 a.m. on Saturday. The CBI has been given three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation, which is due on September 17. The court also allowed Dr. Akhtar Ali to request security from the CBI if needed.

In a related development, the Sealdah Court remanded Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, to 14 days of judicial custody. His custody will continue until September 6, 2024, under CBI supervision.
